Knightsbridge Excellence Rewarded with Design Guild Mark

The combination of style and functionality in the Arran drop-arm chair by Knightsbridge Furniture has been recognised with the award of a Design Guild Mark from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers (WCFM).

Intended to reward excellence in the design of furniture in volume production, the Design Guild Mark is presented annually to a select cohort of British furniture designers and manufacturers following presentations to - and assessment by - a panel of judges. The current panel is chaired by the WCFM's Jonathan Hindle and includes Deyan Sudjic from the Design Museum, Linley's Craig Allen, Sebastian Conran from Studio Conran, designer and hotelier Olga Polizzi and BDP's Lee Cheong.

The Arran drop-arm chair for healthcare applications has been developed by the Knightsbridge in-house design team to meet specific functional criteria in line with infection control, pressure care, supportive comfort and patient mobility issues. Yet it also acknowledges that the design of healthcare seating plays a key role in creating a positive therapeutic environment, with its contemporary and essentially non-institutional styling making it suitable for hospital wards, residential accommodation and care homes for all ages.

The drop-arm system is unobtrusive, simple to use and easy to maintain, with a focus on longevity, given that the mechanism is expected to be in constant daily use over many years. Additional features drawn to the attention of the WCFM Design Guild Mark panel include an ergonomically-shaped back with lumbar support, a discreet hygiene gap between back and seat, and a warmly tactile solid beech frame. This uses wood from verifiable sustainable sources and is treated with an anti-bacterial lacquer for hygiene-critical areas.

Following confirmation of the award, Knightsbridge is now entitled to carry the WCFM crest and the Design Guild Mark logo on all printed and on-line materials relating to the Arran drop-arm range, and to display a numbered and authenticated certificate at Knightsbridge headquarters in Bradford. Additional benefits include a page on the WCFM website and automatic entry into the Design Guild Mark ‘Best of 2008' awards.
